Girl on the Go: Starting My Own Business

Today I am adding an item that is more of a bucket list item, but it will keep me on the go.

Here’s background information that will make this post relevant. In 2011, I received my first freelance job with Rochester Women Magazine. I didn’t receive another freelance opportunity until 2013, but since then, I have had steady work.

I have always kicked around the idea of having a business, but I didn’t know what type of business. Several years ago, I talked to my mom about having a clothing shop, then it was art studio, then it was a combination of both. However, none of those ideas came to fruition.

With the steady work I have received as a writer, I started wondering if this would be a viable business for me, but I was still unsure of taking the steps to running a business even though the freelance work I have been doing is essentially “my business.”

Well, recently, I secured another freelance opportunity with a major client in the Rochester, Minnesota area. This client requires that I obtain an LLC  as well as carry business insurance.

So today, I am including starting my own business on my Girl on the Go list, and crossing it off my list. The Whispering Pen is no longer just a blog, it’s a Limited Liability Company.

Introducing, The Whispering Pen, LLC.

Today’s Haiku:

beautifully balanced—
love of writing becomes work
and I am grateful

Does anyone else have an LLC? How do you manage your writing career?

  1. Congrats! Yes, I am a partner in an LLC…a realty company and love the challenge of both blogging and keeping things going with the LLC…Enjoy your freedom (as it is very freeing!) 🙂 🙂 🙂

  2. That’s awesome! Congratulations! I am sorry I have no experience on LLC/ business set-up, I am considering to have similar thing for my photography in the future, but I guess the practice is different from one country to another. Anyway, I am sure you will do great and and wishing you the best! 🙂
